Today’s easy Italian sausage and peppers will take your game day party to a new level. A classic Italian-American comfort food. Packed with flavor and topped with a chunky Tuscan-inspired Bertolli® Pasta Sauce!
Where I come from, the game is football. A different kind. The kind known here in the States as soccer.
And when the game is between the two leading Egyptian national teams, Port Said, my birth town, seemed to close.
People left work early in the afternoon. They hurried to their favorite street cafes to secure a seat near an old, fuzzy TV screen. At the cafe, you sat in sections according to which team you are rooting for. Often times, fans spilled over into the streets causing passing traffic to a halt.
And through the course of the game hours, and post-game arguments, beverages and sandwiches floated among the loud masses.
Game day looks a lot different for me here in Atlanta. It is football. College football to be exact. And our gathering place is typically at home with friends.
There is a different kind of intensity to our game day nowadays. It’s the friendly rivalry between my husband, a Michigan fan, and his friend Chris, an Ohio state fan. The two teams have yet to play each other this season, but the rivalry still rears its head and weaves itself into the conversation. In fun, of course.
This will not surprise you. To me, the best part of game day is the food.
As friends, we may not be rooting for the same team. But the food? That we surely agree on!
We agree that game day food must be: easy, flavor-packed, and comforting. Hence today’s Italian sausage and peppers hoagies.
The Bertolli®Taste of Italy® event at Kroger made it super easy to go for an Italian-themed game day. Kroger’s selection of all-things-Italian conveniently put together, I simply could not resist!
And while today’s Italian sausage and peppers recipe came from my Ohio State-cheering friend Elizabeth (still love her), the extra special twist came from the Tuscan-inspired Bertolli® Pasta Sauce.
I chose the Bertolli® Tomato & Basil Pasta Sauce as a dressing to my Italian sausage and peppers hoagies. This chunky restaurant-style sauce gave that extra juiciness and really played up the sweetness of the bell peppers. And just for good measure, I finished the hoagies with a little garnish of fresh basil.
Whether you have a standing game day tradition with friends, or maybe you just enjoy simple classic comfort foods, these Italian sausage and peppers hoagies will not disappoint.

Here is the recipe:
6 Spicy Italian Sausage Links
1 jar Bertolli® Tomato & Basil pasta sauce
3 Bell Peppers (different colors), sliced into thin strips
1 large red onion, sliced into thin half moons
6 hoagie buns
Fresh basil leaves for garnish
In a large pan with a lid, heat 1 tbsp olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the sausages and brown them on medium-high heat for 5 minutes, turning frequently. Add ½ cup of water and lower the heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer for another 10-12 minutes or until the sausage is cooked through.
Warm the Bertolli® Tomato & Basil Pasta Sauce on medium-low, stirring occasionally. Once warmed through, lower the heat to a minimum and keep covered for a few minutes until ready to use.
Meanwhile, heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a cast iron skillet or pan. Once the oil is hot, add the sliced bell peppers and onions. Sear the peppers and onions on high, tossing constantly, until they soften and are blackened in some parts. Sprinkle a very small amount of salt and remove from the heat.
Now, open the hoagie buns and line them up on a serving tray. Add the Italian sausage, then top with a generous amount of the warmed Bertolli® Tomato & Basil sauce and the seared peppers and onions. And if you like, garnish with fresh basil leaves. Enjoy!
